Description:
In 1947 Gregory Ain designed the 10 unit Avenel Housing Association Project for a group of motion picture cartoonists and their families in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake Area. The group purchased two adjoining 60-foot lots, 140 feet deep, on a 15-degree slope and Ain designed two five-unit, wood framed buildings with cement plaster exteriors, horizontal window bands, and flat roofs. Access to each unit is on the side elevation. The property was listed at the local level of significance in the area of architecture as a good representative example of Gregory Ain’s multiple family housing in Los Angeles. Ain was one of several early Los Angeles Modernist architects.
