Historical Landmark

Description:
Lancha Plana (Spanish for "flat boat") was established in 1848-1850 as miners moved into the area to work the mineral deposits along the Mokelumne River. By 1860, the town was large and prosperous enough to publish its own newspaper, the Lancha Plana Dispatch, which later became the Amador Dispatch. Poverty Bar, Camp Opra, Copper Center, and Put’s Bar were some of the neighboring communities in the area, with a ferry line running between Lancha Plana and Poverty Bar. Today, the site of Lancha Plana is submerged in the waters of Camanche Reservoir.
